About this Candle Holder Made with Saguaro Ribs and Reconditioned Old, Rusty Tin Cans
Candles are included. We'll also include a small gift as our way of saying thanks. And FREE shipping!
This piece was handcrafted by Ma & Pa Cass, on their property in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona.
The ribs were foraged locally from saguaro 'skeletons', which is what remains of the cactus after it dies. The tin cans, cleaned up and varnished are old cat food cans. New shiny holders for the candles didn't fit the desired rustic, primitive desert look and feel.
About the Saguaro Cactus The saguaro cactus is one of the most amazing plants in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. It has a corrugated shape with vertical ribs that are made of woody tissue that provides structural support and protection for the cactus.
This majestic cactus is the largest in the United States, reaching heights of up to 60 feet (18 meters) and living for up to 200 years. It is also one of the defining plants of the Sonoran Desert, a vast and diverse ecosystem that covers parts of southern Arizona, southeast California, and western Sonora, Mexico.
The saguaro cactus has a unique and fascinating life cycle. It grows very slowly, taking 10 years to reach one inch in height and 75 years to develop its first arm. It relies on nurse plants, such as palo verde trees or mesquite shrubs, to provide shade and protection from frost and predators when it is young. As it matures, it competes with its nurse plant for water and nutrients, often outliving it.
The saguaro cactus is not only important for the Sonoran Desert ecosystem, but also for the culture and history of the people who live there. The Tohono O'odham tribe, who have inhabited the region for centuries, consider the saguaro as a sacred being, a different type of humanity. They use every part of the cactus for food, medicine, tools, and ceremonies. They also respect and protect the saguaro from harm, as they believe it has a spirit and a personality.
The saguaro cactus is a remarkable plant that deserves our admiration and appreciation. It is a living symbol of the beauty and resilience of the Sonoran Desert and its inhabitants.
